About Me

Welcome, I’m glad you’re here!

My name is Kenzel. I am originally from the Northwest (near Seattle – SeaTac for those familiar with the area.)

I have lived in all over the West Coast: Washington, Oregon, California. I have traveled a good deal of the U.S – most recently to the Alabama Coast and Western Florida. I am constantly amazed at how beautiful our country is!

I have a special affinity for the East Coast (having spent much time in Connecticut and Massachusetts with relatives) and currently reside in the Mid-West. I love it here.

My goal (well, ok, one of many) since childhood had been to write.

Back in the 80’s I was writing query letters to magazines. I sent queries to a few women’s magazines. I began “query-ing” because a couple of friends from my college level writing classes read my work and when they brought it back, insisted that I needed to submit.

Even with my history in Tennis, it only took a single rejection letter from each editor for me to “back off.” I have tended to think this meant I had no “back bone” but as time has pressed on I realized it was God. Being published wasn’t something I was ready for, not yet.

I was a voracious reader though. A habit my Mom got me started on when I was a Sprout.

Back in the 80’s, the internet was (virtually) an unknown. My Dad got me my first computer when I was a Sophomore. It was an IBM PC. The thing was huge. But it was an amazing tool. I still crack up when I think of the “floppy disks” I used to save my work on. Now I use thumb drives, and smart media chips! The comparisons are astonishing!

I stopped any attempts at magazine publishing by 1994, the year I married. That was also the year the original blogging community got started. Looking back, I find that ironic.

If you had told me when the Blogging community first started years ago, that I too would be a blogger one day, I wouldn’t have believed it. Yet, here I am. God is bigger than I am and I am also learning he has a sense of humor.

This blog exists simply because of what I call Divine Intervention. This plan is ALL God’s. It was certainly never mine. But that is how God works. He knows what we need, better than we do.

So, what’s behind “Shining a Light?”

It’s about finding Encouragement and Inspiration in Everyday. Sometimes we have to dig (or search) to find a bright moment in the day, but it’s always worth it!

There is a lot going on in the world around us and a lot of it is: unsettling, surprising, shocking and eye-opening (more often than not, as time marches on, it’s prophetic.)

I hope that throughout these pages, within the modern parables (contemporary stories), music/songs, pictures and prayers you will find something that brings you comfort, confirmation, understanding or insight. Hopefully all of the above!

Most important, I hope you are able to experience Joy. It’s not always easy finding Joy, Peace or Contentment in the everyday, but in the long-run those fruits have the best ROI (return on investment!)

Whatever you do, make sure you do it with a smile on your face and a song in your heart

A smile is our gift to those around us. It brings Light into a world full of Darkness

John 1:5New Living Translation (NLT)

The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.[a]

So: USE YOUR SMILE!

And remember, we ALL have a light to shine…but time and sorrow can tend to wear it down.

Help someone else find theirs today.

The Lights will shine brighter everywhere

when we encourage others to light the fire within!

I hope you will peruse the pages and posts and leave comments. Share anything you think would be a benefit or blessing!

Thank you visiting my corner of the Blog-sphere!

Blessings,

-Kenzel

  1. I have really enjoyed your blog! And I would like to nominate it for the Liebster Award. I tried to make sure, beforehand, that you had not already received this, but if I missed that I apologize. I really hope you choose to accept it, and – if you do – I can’t wait to read your answers to the questions. You can find out the details here: http://goodgraceiousness.wordpress.com/2014/01/11/liebster-award/. Best wishes! ~ Vida

    • Hi Vida, The award is something I hadn’t heard of til you brought it up. But, that’s cool! 🙂 It may take me a while to “fulfill’ my obligations on this (and I have no idea where to look for NEW blogs…help me?) Thank you for the kudos though…it’s very kind.
      Blessings

  2. Vida,
What is Freshly Pressed? I didn’t think that is something I would do for my blog – but is it? I tried the “reader” idea you suggested but it didn’t seem to “work.” Talk about a blogging “novice!” 😉
    Thanks, Kenzel

  3. Thanks for the like. Writing is certainly something that is inner-driven, by gifting and most especially by the Holy Spirit, but as I’m sure you know, it takes focus and plain old hard work as well. May you find great satisfaction and blessing as you bless others with the words God gives you.
